Abstract

This paper is built upon a detailed analysis of the pen strokes of Feliks
Petančić conducted on the corpus of handwritten testimonies. On the basis of the
material available to date the features that characterise his penmanship are defined.
The particular features of his pen strokes are used to, on the one hand, analyse the
handwritten material that has already been associated with Petančić and on the
other to draw attention to material that is relevant but previously unconsidered.
The analysis yielded the following results. Firstly, it is shown that the attribution
of MS Budapest Országos Széchényi Könyvtár, Cod. Lat. 378 to Petančić is mistaken. Secondly, it is demonstrated for the first time that MS Madrid, Biblioteca
Nacional de España, VITR/4/12 is a Petančić autograph. Thirdly, two manuscripts
from the scriptorium of Matthew Corvin – Venice, Biblioteca nazionale Marciana
Lat. VIII, 2 (=2796) and Budimpešta, Országos Széchényi Könyvtár, Cod. Lat.
369 – are shown to be in the hand of Feliks Petančić. Finally, it is proved that a
document held in the Hungarian National Archives – Frangepán család (Q 227),
38563 – was also written by Feliks Petančić and constitutes the earliest known
extant evidence of Petančić’s Senj period.
