Abstract

Helianthus debilis subsp. cucumerifolius was reported for the first time in Algeria (Aïn Sefra, Naâma Province), representing the first record of this North American taxon in North Africa. Information on its morphology, distribution, and ecology is provided in this paper. Field observations indicate that the taxon is becoming naturalised, as several populations were recorded in disturbed habitats within the city of Aïn Sefra. The species may be more widespread in Algeria but overlooked owing to its resemblance to other introduced annual Helianthus species, most notably H. annuus.
