Abstract

The paper presents the so far unknown music manuscripts by Zadar Renaissance church writer and translator Šime Budinić (1530/35–1600). While working as a municipal clerk Budinić wrote a few bastardelli, which are kept today in the Historical Archives of Zadar. Two of them (dating from 1560-1561) contain three music fragments, all rather short sketches and counterpunctual excercises. These sketches and drafts may manifest Budinić's inclination towards more complex composing. These autographs are among the very rare examples of Croatian Renaissance polyphony which have survived up to date in a manuscript form. The paper gives a transcription of all three music fragments.
