Abstract

It is well known that there is harsh competition on both the Croatian and the international foodstuff market. In this struggle the autochthonous and traditional products are highly appreciated. These are the products of a special quality. Such foodstuff, with special features that result from the quality of their ingredients, the way of production and refinement, as well as the climate and which are appreciated on both domestic and international market should be protected by originality marks, geographical origin marks, traditional prestige marks or certificate seals. One of the famous symbols of the wider north-western area of Croatia is the Zagorje turkey (“zagorski puran”). The project “Turkey from Bednja“ (“Purek z Bednje”) was launched in 2004 in the County of Varaždin. A cooperative whose task was to promote the Zagorje turkey was also established. Suggested model of production enables family farms to gain additional income, and in the case of mass production, even basic income. When dealing with agricultural cooperatives, a producer remains the owner of the product until it is sold to a final consumer. A producer takes the business risk, but on the other hand gains additional profit from distribution and promotion, which would otherwise belong to a middleman. As the product has gradually been gaining its position on the market, there has been initiative to protect its geographical origin and certification seal.
