Implicit intelligence theories for people of different age, sex and education

Abstract

Some of the typical constructs of implicit intelligence theories have been tested on eight samples differing in age, education and gender (total N=808) using exemplar approach and prototype method . The results showed that lay-persons form implicit intelligence theories that do not completely match "classical" psychometric definitions. These conceptions are somewhat wider since they include not only cognitive aspects, but also a whole spectrum of specific personality traits and interpersonal skills. It seems that lay-persons think of intelligence as a part of the complete personality, rather than an isolated phenomenon. The general socio-demographic characteristics of participants are shown to have a reasonable influence on their intelligence concept. Participants are specially prone to define people with characteristics similar to their own as being intelligent. Similarly as in most of the western countries, this research has also confirmed the steroetype of Einstein being the proto-type of a highly intelligent person.
