Abstract
The aim of this study was to modify the Experiences in Close Relationship Inventory by Brennan et al. (1998) into a suitable measure for adult attachment in various types of close relationships. Until now, the Inventory was exclusively used for measuring attachment to romantic partners. In order to assess the level of attachment to others (friends and family members), instructions for each version as well as objects of attachment in each item were changed appropriately. The study was devided into two parts: the Inventory was shortened, based on the results of the first part of the study, while the cross-validation was made in the second part. Participants were undergraduate psychology and criminology students of both sexes (N 1 =210; N 2 =150).
Findings suggest that shortened Inventory avoids content redundancy, while maintaining psychometric characteristics of the original instrument. Latent strucuture remained the same, showing two orthogonal factors – avoidance and anxiety, each consisting of 9 items. The reliability of the new, shorter scale is almost as high as of the original. Cross-validation of the new scale confirmed the expected psychometric characteristics.
