Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is a collecti ve term for all chronic orofacial
pain of non-dental ethiology. The diagnosti cs of temporomandibular disorders is very delicate
and seeks collaborati on between denti sts, maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, prostheti
cs denti sts, orthodonts, psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists and someti mes the use of
sofi sti cated and expensive equipment. The aim of using a standardized protocol of the diagnosti
c criteria (RDC/TMD) is to determine the prevalence of clinical diagnoses of the TMD,
the prevalence of psychological stress (depression and unspecifi c physical symptoms), as
well as the prevalence of psycho-social dysfuncti on (grading of chronic pain).
