Abstract
The library of the Slade-Šilović family has its origin in the
inheritance of books through the gentry and civic relationships of
Dragazzo, Skakoc, Lubin, and Andrić families in blood relations
with the Slade-Šilović family. The library covers varied book items
with rare specimen of incunabula, and the books printed between
the 16th and 21st centuries. It contains almost all the books about
Trogir, from the City Statute in 1480, books on blessed Ivan
Trogirski, works of Antonio Lubin, Ivan Katalinić, Ivan Lucić,
and Pavle Anderis to the works of writers of the 19th century. And
besides, there are books of clerical subjects, liturgical notes, books
of theology, mathemtics, pharmacy, botany, zoology, medecine,
philosophy, history, literature, etc. The archives kept within the
library premises contain the material on Dragazzo, Andreis, Slade,
Lubin and other noble and civic families of Trogir and provide
inexhaustible source of information on the history of Trogir
and Dalmatia. Further on there are the manuscripts suc as the
Geneaology and Heraldry of Trogir notary Jerolim Bufalis. Also
worth mentioning is the collection of publications, hemeroteque,
and detached and unique documents relating to Trogir and
Dalmatia. The library contents indicate high and classical culture
of the owner and give at the same time a sort of chronicle at the
time of its genesis.
The archives kept in this library, art collection (made of
pictures, graphics, oils, tempera on wood, etchings, and aquarelles
dating back from the 15th to 20th centuries, pieces of furniture and
artefacts for the interior of the house) and the library form together
the Slade-Šilović family collection that is truly unique to Trogir.
The Slade-Šilović Trogir collection seems one of the rarest
private collections in Dalmatia and thus represents a valuable
record, not only locally but also nationwide, all the more so
because most of Dalmatian collections have gone to waste over the
past decades owing to splitting, impoverishment, and inadequate
protection.
The Slade-Šilović family members have managed to maintain
the whole inventory of contents compiled through history, collected
over several centuries, so that it represents as a whole and by
individual items a rarity of immense significance and wealth for
Trogir as municipality and diocese in Dalmatia.
