Abstract

The 1817 register of Dubrovnik emigrants, prepared from intelligence reports, vividly depicts the contemporary situation in which the most entrepreneurial among the Dubrovnik tradesmen, shipowners and sea captains departed to look for new centres. At the same time, the best educated intellectuals departed the City to pursue their careers at European courts and universities. The state apparatus of the Dubrovnik Republic that had once required linguistically trained
diplomats was no longer in existence. Dubrovnik now became an ordinary city in one of the most backward provinces of the Habsburg Empire. A generation of talented people at the peak of their powers left Dubrovnik for good. Their leave set off emigration as a trend for the economically worst-affected strata of the society: merchants and seamen. Among the nobility and the priesthood, only those whose politics did not allow them to reconcile with either French or Austrian
occupation left the city.
