Abstract

Political factionalism of the Croatian territory and political reasons as well have rendered impossible construction of the railway-tracks from the Croatian inland to the coast. The population of Lika's hinterland remained so isolated not only during the Monarchy before and after the Settlement, but also in the 1918 and all the time until 1945. Senj, as a very Croatian port on the coast with Lika in its hinterland, was never supposed to get the railway not even when they had the possibility to have the trains driven by the electrical power from their hydro-power plant. Anyway, in all the plans for the construction of the state railway Senj has always known to secure its place therein either before or after the plans were issued. Such an example was the Knežić project from the 1829 and 1838 and after the Railway Conference in Zagreb in 1864. The realisation of plans for building the railway of Senj was, of course, delayed for several years by building Karlovac-Rijeka railway in 1873. After the Bosnia was incorporated in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Senj have continued their struggle for the railway to Bihać approving any possible solution whatsoever. After the 1918 they still do not recede from their railway, awaiting at least the connection to the Dalmatian railway at Oštarije and Vrhovine, all the time hopelessly lowering their requests. They were expecting that the railway might be built by the Croatian Border authorities with their funds, while they were incorporated in the Croatian Military Border. Afterwards they relied their hopes on the state funds only, being prepared to offer all the available material resources of their own. This paper gives so the opportunity to grasp numerous solutions and intrigues interlacing the railway of Senj as well as the justified arguments Senj was presenting in view of being connected into the European railway network. Documentation that displays the efforts of Senj in trying to get their railway is very extensive indeed and this work is nothing else but an attempt to duly represent their endeavours accordingly.
