Abstract

The main problem of this study was to determine the relationship between
the three groups of variables: phonological awareness, the child's competency to go to
school and results in two tests used in assessing the preparedness for going to the
primary school. The sample of all the special preschool children who were obliged to
school next school year (72) was examined (members of the educational groups in
Kindergarten, "Trnoruzica" in Zagreb), applying Phonological Awareness
Questionnaire (UFS), Santa Barbara Healthy Start Questionnaire for Teachers
(SBZSZO), Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices and Graphic Test of Perceptual
Organization (Bender-Santucci). Significant correlations were found between all
three groups of variables: phonological awareness, child's general competency to go
to school and two objectively measured characteristics (non-verbal intelligence and
visual-motor abilities). However, further investigation of these correlations is
necessary, on a larger and more representative sample of subjects.
