Abstract

The part of Josip Andreis’s writing opus dealing with Croatian 20th century music - in spite of the later published expert literature on the same topic - still encounters considerable interest today. That makes it an obligation to observe it not only in closely critical way but also to view it in the context of the conditions and needs of the time of its emergence. An attempt at such observation exposes occasional cracks between the principled, declarative and normative frameworks in which Andreis places his historical narrative, and the particular interpretations that are intended to prove them. As it seems that in later reception of his texts their metaphorical level outlasts the factualist one, awareness of such cracks gains in importance, equally enabling a critical distance from the written texts and also a better recognition of his implicit attitudes.
