Abstract

Adequate choice of hybrids is one of the most efficacious factors that can
contribute to the improvement of the yield and quality of sugar beet root. To determine
the production values of new hybrids of sugar beet resistant to leaf spot disease
(Cercospora beticola Sacc.) and/or rhisomania (BNYVV) and/or rhizoctonia
(Rhizoctonia solani Kühn), micro varietal trials were set up on the experimental field of
the Faculty of Agriculture, Zagreb, in the period 2006-2008. The trials involved 35
sugar beet hybrids belonging to the five selection companies selling seed in the
Republic of Croatia. The studied sugar beet hybrids differed significantly in root and
sugar yields as well in sugar and soluble non-sugar concentrations. However, the results
of a large number of hybrids were equal in value, since the differences were within
statistically allowable deviation. In 2006, the hybrid Lavina gave the highest root yield
(105.8 t/ha), Gazeta had the highest sugar content (15.47%), and the highest yield of
pure sugar was obtained from Markus (13.18 t/ha) and Theodora (13.15 t/ha). In 2007,
the highest root yield was given by the hybrid Amadea (109.4 t/ha), the highest sugar
content by Markus (16.79%), and the highest sugar yield by Iris (14.83 t/ha). In 2008,
the highest-yielding hybrid was Theodora (root yield 99.2 t/ha), the highest sugar
contents were determined for Giraf (17.78%) and Tibor (17.75%), and the highest sugar
yields were achieved with Theodora (13.21 t/ha), Karera (13.10 t/ha) and Amadea
(13.09 t/ha). In all three investigated years, the highest sugar content and sugar yield in
average were achieved with Z type hybrids.
