SWISS CHARD SEED PRODUCTION IN CROATIA

Abstract

Quality seed is a basic postulate for successful Swiss chard production. After the
pea and bean Swiss chard is second important vegetable in seed production in Croatia.
Production of Swiss chard seed is the most spread in north-west part of Croatia where
the seed are grown on average 15,5 ha yearly. During the last seven years in period
2002 – 2008 total Swiss chard seed production in Croatia was 198 t, what is yearly
production of 28 t. Average yield of seed in this period was 1,8 t/ha. In same period in
Croatia 239 t of Swiss chard seed was certificated what is 34 t yearly. From domestic
production during last seven years was certificated 164 t what is in average 23 t yearly.
From import in same period was certificated 75 t of Swiss chard seed or in average 11 t
yearly. Croatia is self sufficient in Swiss chard seed production with 68% while 32% of
needs are necessary to import. In period 2005 – 2008 from Croatia was exported 39 t of
Swiss chard seed what is in average 10 t yearly.
In Croatia there are mostly as a category certificated Swiss chard seed production
while imported seed is exclusively standard seed category.
Agro ecological conditions in north-west part of Croatia and used technology
ensuring production of high yield and high quality of Swiss chard seed.
