ON POLITICAL EUPHEMISMS IN CONTEMPORARY RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article considers the theoretical basis of the notion of euphemism and concentrates on the notion of political euphemism in contemporary Russian language. While euphemisms generally are used with the aim of softening a negative or unpleasant meaning, the function of camouflage is more characteristic of political
euphemisms. The article proceeds to analyze some examples of political euphemisms from the recent press. The conclusion is being made that euphemisms are productive
in contemporary political communication.
