Abstract

Based on the comparison between some selected parts from Planine (The Mountains) by Zoranić and Tirena by Držić, the paper investigates some aspects of literary mannerism which, according to Pavličić, are crucial to the definition of this phenomenon: the relationship of a literary work to its tradition, reality and to itself.
The strarting point of this paper is the ambivalence which the authors show in their relationship to the selected and marked literary tradition, which leads them either to the division into a marked and absent tradition and an unmarked and present tradition (Zoranić), or to a confusing and contradictory evaluation of the selected
tradition which varies from apology to its denial in the same text (Držić).
