Abstract

The effect of 37 isolates of F. graminearum, F. avenaceum, F. verticillioides, F.
sporotrichoides, F. poae, F. heterosporum, F. crookwellense, F. proliferatum, F.
semitectum, F. tricinctum and F. oxysporum on wheat germination was evaluated in
laboratory conditions. Wheat seed was placed on developed colonies of the above
mentioned fungi and incubated for seven days. The number of ungerminated seed was
determined and the average length of coleoptile was measured, and saprophytic fungal
species Rhizopus stolonifer was used as a control. The percentage of ungerminated
wheat seed after incubation ranged from 85 % (F. avenaceum F32 isolate) to 3 % (F.
oxysporum F3III isolate), with 7 % of ungerminated seed on R. stolonifer isolate. 17
isolates belonging to species F. avenaceum (5 out of 6 isolates tested), F. graminearum
(11 out of 13 isolates tested), and F. crookwellense (one isolate tested) caused
significantly higher number of ungerminated seed (P=0.05) compared to R. stolonifer.
Isolates belonging to species F. verticillioides, F. sporotrichioides, F. poae, F.
heterosporum, F. proliferatum, F. semitectum, F. tricinctum and F. oxysporum did not
cause significantly higher number of ungerminated seed (P=0.05) compared to R.
stolonifer. Similarly, significant retardation of coleoptile elongation (P=0.05) was
caused only by isolates of F. avenaceum (5 out of 6 isolates tested), F. graminearum
(11 out of 13 isolates tested), and F. crookwellense (one isolate tested). Species which
have not caused significantly higher number of ungerminated seed have neither caused
significant retardation of coleoptile elongation compared to saprophytic species R.
stolonifer.
