Abstract
The system of identification and registration in Republic of Croatia has been significantly changed with reorganization of horse breeding according to regulations of European Union. Those changes resulted with formation of new Stud Books and with closing Stud Books of existing breeds. Also the new unique system for registration of equidae was introduced.
New regulation for identification and registration of equidae (N N 74/07) made Identification documents (passports) mandatory for all equidae born in Republic of Croatia in the goal to determine identity of animals, to record genealogical information, movement, medical records and the control of nutriments that are entering food chain for human consumption. New regulation has also brought some changes in marking of horses and donkeys. With branding as the additional method of identification, implementation of microchip transponder in the left side of the neck was introduced.
Changed identification and registration system of equidae had big influence on breeding and veterinarian aspect in horse breeding. The biggest benefit of this system will have the owners of sport horses as the originators of horse industry. It has made movement of those horses outside the boundaries of Croatia, registration and verification of horses by international and sport authorities much easier.
