Abstract
Beginning with the division of the contemporary Islamic thought into three dominant intellectual directions - conservatism, Islamism and modernism - the article analyses the relation between all these towards the idea of equality between man and woman. Topics such as a woman’s rights inside the family and society, the participation of women in the public sector, women’s rights to education and work, human rights to a polygamist type of marriage, women’s chastity, and the practice of covering oneself with a veil, have all been the subject of very important debate in Islamic thought from the beginning of the 20th century until today.
