Abstract

Independent from its specific characteristics Croatia may serve as a mirror
of the European urban heritage. The article follows which layers of development we are able to recognize in the cities of Croatia, how the urban network in Croatia is differentiated within itself and how the different layers are bound to general tendencies in European urbanism. The article pays special attention to the formation of the urban commune in the High Middle Ages as a link between the maritime an continental areas of Croatia and to the formation of the contemporary picture of the city during the 19th and 20th centuries.
