Abstract

In this paper the comparison of the existing versions of conformal map projections for Croatia and the new optimal conformal map projections according to the criterion of minimal maximal absolute linear distortion is given. Gauss-Krüger's and Lambert's conformal conic projections were, still are and will be applied for official mapping of the state. The linear distortions in some existing versions of these projections are given together with optimal versions. Next, the application of the stereographic map projection is performed. It is shown that Gauss-Krüger's and Lambert's conformal conic projections are similar according to the criterion. The stereographic map projection is even better in the same sense. Beside these standard conformal map projections, the conformal polynomial projections are also investigated. The degree of the polynominals applied is from 2nd to 10th. It is shown that these projections can give considerably lower absolute linear distortions, caused by irregular shape of the region. For example, the land area of Croatia can be mapped with maximal absolute linear distortion of 1 dm/km with conformal polynomial projection of the 6th degree. As a region of Croatia the state territory with epicontinental sea zone as well as only the continental part of Croatia were accounted. The optimal versions of the map projections were found using numerical approach with application of the software package MATLAB.
