Abstract

In this paper, the author studies lexical units which he finds in glagolitic texts and texts written in the Latin alphabet from the 17th and the 18th century from the island of Silba. Although this kind of text limits the usage of diverse words, the author found a rather rich lexis, among which the most common are the names of the sacraments, church objects, prayers, titles of the church dignitaries, officials within a brotherhood, occupations, toponyms, names of diseases, words connected to seamanship, and words that express family relations, currencies or the sides of the world. Lexical units deriving from Latin origin can be found in registers, but there are also those inherited from the old Slavic language. Through comparison of the lexical units found within the given corpus with those from the present day local speech of Šibenik, we find a partially preserved lexis, while just those older lexemes, the author concludes, connect us to the past and our own identity.
