Abstract

The priority of this article is to give an extensive overview of the philosophical teachings by German phenomenologist Max Scheler, better known as the ‘material ethics of values’. Since the central topic of the work derives from the area of ethics, Scheler’s relation towards Kant’s criticism regarding the pure, theoretical, as well as the practical and moral domain is extensively presented. The article also exposes the inner structure of the hierarchy of values, and tries to clarify the foundation and development of the ‘material ethics of values’ as presented by Scheler in his enormous work ‘Formalism in Ethics and Non-formal Ethics of Values’.
