- Guidelines for authors
Discrepancy is a student-run journal publishing papers in social sciences and humanities. The first number was published in year 2000 by the Sociology students’ club Discrepancy at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb. Articles published so far cover a wide variety of academic disciplines and fields, ranging from cultural sociology and visual anthropology to social psychoanalysis and literary criticism. Most of the authors come from the University of Zagreb, but there were also authors from foreign universities, such as University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), University of Belgrade (Serbia), Harvard University, Yale University (USA), and London School of Economics (UK). The journal is published in Croatian, and it is published annually. It is divided in four categories. First one is comprised of original works by authors, consisting of, usually, five papers. The second category is devoted to translations into Croatian of relevant classical and contemporary literature so far not available in Croatian. The aim of this translation work is to present to Croatian academia writers and themes that have been left out of the dominant social and humanistic research in the country. These translations include first-time appearances in Croatian of Henry D. Thoreau, Krishan Kumar, William G. Sumner, Loic Wacquant and Erik Olin Wright. The third category is the interview in which we have published extensive interviews with a broad range of authors, mostly foreign. The list includes John Keane, Jerry Z. Muller, Obrad Savić, Erik Olin Wright, and Jeffrey C. Alexander. And finally, we have book reviews and review essays of most recent publications both in Croatian and foreign literature in social sciences and humanities. Our goal is to provide a venue for students to present their work to their peers and the broader academic community both in Croatia and other Croatian-speaking countries. Thus, a wider polemic territory is created for an encounter of diverse and polemical ideas. This allows students to make their first scholarly steps and receive significant feedback from their peers to improve it. Along with facilitating students’ entry into academia, our main goal is to contribute to the development of the scholarly culture in Croatia, presenting it with both important classical writers and ideas, and, more importantly, with significant contemporary achievements in the fields of social sciences and humanities. We encourage scholarship that is interdisciplinary and original, one that deals with current academic and social issues offering a bright new insight, and covering the relevant spectrum of the problem that is being discussed. All the articles are reviewed by the editorial board and its associates enabling students to get relevant comments about their works in order for them to improve it. This allows students to acknowledge the process of scholarly publishing- very different from their routine undergraduate work- where most of the texts have to be rewritten time and time before ready for publication. We invite students to send us their work, and to prepare it beforehand by following the instructions in the "submission guidelines" rubric in the left menu. There is no strict deadline for submission, and we welcome papers throughout the year. They should be written in Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, or English. The ones in English selected for publication will be translated into Croatian, and published in the print edition of the journal, while the English version will be available solely online.
