Abstract
The observed antisymmetry of the chemical potential µ (q, T) of real gases around the critical density qc and Thom's theory of catastrophes suggested that the following two hypotheses be tested against experimental data : a) δ4µ (qc, T)/δq4 = 0 and δ2µ (qc, T)/δq2 = 0 for all T, and b) δ2µ (qc, T)/ δq2 = 0 for all T. We found that the hypotheses a) and b) are compatible with experimental data for Xe, CO2, N2, ethylene and propene, if the experimental P/RT q values are changed, on the average, by about 0.2% and 0.05%, respectively.
