Sažetak

Croatian and Yugoslav writer, literary theorist and publicist Predrag Matvejević wrote a letter to the president of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, in 1974, dissatisfied with the fact that he had constitutionally become president of the state for life. Matvejević suggested that he give up the „honour” because the institution of the life tenure „did not sound good”. The fate of the letter has remained unknown and unsolved to this day, thanks primarily to Matvejević himself, who told the public three very different versions of the story, but also to journalists and intellectuals who uncritically accepted, transmitted and expanded upon his stories.
