Karađorđevo and the Division of Bosnia and Herzegovina: Media Narratives and Contested Memories of Yugoslavia’s Dissolution*

Certain episodes from the dissolution of Yugoslavia are particularly propitious for the formation of contested memories. This paper focuses specifically on the narrative of a division of Bosnia and Herzegovina, allegedly orchestrated by the Croatian President Franjo Tuđman and the Serbian President Slobodan Milošević. This interpretation of the war in Croatia largely revolves around the meeting between Tuđman and Milošević in Karađorđevo in March 1991,where they reportedly discussed the partition of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The article conceptually frames this claim as part of the contested histories and memories regarding the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Empirically, it investigates how frequently and in what ways the unproven claim about a division of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the alleged Karađorđevo agreement appears in Croatian online media. Drawing on a corpus of articles from 22 outlets published between 2002 and 2025 and collected with the TakeLab Retriever tool, the study analyzes the frequency and stance distributions across outlets.
