Sažetak
This paper takes up the question of how training, continuous professional development and qualification frameworks shape the effectiveness of non-executive directors and supervisory boards across Southeast Europe. Eleven national systems are brought into view, encompassing both EU Member States and the countries of the Western Balkans. The study proceeds along comparative lines, drawing on company law, codes of corporate governance and regulatory guidance. What emerges is a picture of formal alignment with European standards, alongside a far more limited development of practices that meaningfully enhance how boards actually perform, particularly in the domains of structured training and measurable professional development. The paper argues, in closing, that any genuine improvement in board performance will call for a more systematic approach to the building of competence, one that rests on stronger training infrastructure and clearer professional standards.
