Sažetak

The article examines the failed attempt to restore the Montenegrin state under Italian protection in 1941. Following the dissolution of the Yugoslav state in the Second World War, Montenegro became incorporated into the Italian geopolitical sphere of influence situated in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas. This fact aligned with the desire of supporters of the former Petrović-Njegoš dynasty and the political organisations of the so-called Greens in Montenegro itself, who constituted a minority at the time. The concept ultimately proved unsuccessful for a number of reasons, including the loss of former Montenegrin territories, the failure of dynastic succession, the separation from Serbia, and the formal involvement of Italy in the war against the USSR. Following a series of preparatory measures, the restoration of the Montenegrin state was formally declared on 12 July 1941, which coincided with the Feast of St. Peter according to the Julian calendar. The collapse occurred less than 24 hours later following a mass uprising of the Montenegrin people on 13 July, when Serbian monarchists and Montenegrin communists formed a temporary coalition. The article presents the views of leading Italian personalities in Montenegro, specifically Count Serafino Mazzolini and General Alessandro Pirzio Biroli, on the underlying causes of the project’s demise. Their insights are particularly revealing. Furthermore, the observations of the Italian foreign minister, Count Galeazzo Ciano, who was responsible for coordinating the efforts to implement this concept, are also noteworthy.
