Sažetak

In the field of musica sacra, Franjo Dugan Jr. worked as a composer, choir master (conductor) of the Zvonimir and Stjepan Radić singing societies, and only periodically also as an organist.
As a composer he wrote a rather small opus that encompasses five (by name only seven) choral compositions; these were one motet and four very simple harmonisations, that is, one liturgical song for mixed choir (Kraljice neba) and three church vernacular songs for a 3-part female choir (V jutro otprem oči, Zdravo sveti šakramentum and Bože milostivni), and finally, one mass, intended for a mixed-voice choir singing a cappella (Staroslavenska misa).
According to the musical genres and the performing ensembles, all of Dugan’s sacral compositions are vocal works, composed for an a cappella choir ensemble and, according to their purpose and/or their connection to the content and characteristics of religious texts (as a consequence of classification of church, liturgical and spiritual/sacral compositions generally), sacred works by Dugan Jr. count among the liturgical and church compositions group, which could be meant for potential extra-liturgical (concert) and liturgical purpose, too (Staroslavenska misa; Ecce sacerdos).
Among the sacred and secular works of small form, the Ecce sacerdos motet, for a 4-part a cappella male choir and two soloists (a tenor and baritone), has a special position; its uniqueness was also the consequence of the fact that the motet (besides the mass, partly) is probably the author’s only completely original work.
Finally, one part of Dugan’s sacred opus was formerly published: as a musical supplement to the journal Sv. Cecilija (V jutro otprem oči, Zdravo sveti šakramentum and Bože milostivni), as well as an edition of Hrvatsko književno društvo Sv. Jeronima / The Croatian Literary Society of St Jerome (Staroslavenska misa); that fact was an indicator of the presence of the mentioned sacral compositions in the performing practice of the period and the positioning of Dugan himself in the circle of promising musicians of his time.
