Sažetak

This article concerns the standards of the journalism profession as it relates to the following question: What are the most poignant and common experiences of journalists in Croatia and how does the public view them? The authors describe the changes that the journalistic profession in Croatia has undergone over the previous two decades, and investigates how these changes have aff ected the overall behavior of the media, as well as the social and professional status of journalists. The authors separately address the Croatian public’s diminished confi dence in the media and the journalistic profession. Further, the authors assess how changes to editorial policies and the quality of journalistic reporting have impacted the redefined nature of the profession, as well as the image of journalists in the Croatian public. How do Croatian citizens envisage the role of journalists in society, and how do they perceive the mission, professional endeavors, and the manner of work and behavior of journalists? The results of this study are compared to global experiences, and attempt to provide guidelines for returning dignity to the journalistic profession.
