Sažetak

Numerous scientific papers dealing with topics related to reduction of greenhouse gas emission, as well as developing means for prevention of the same, that are part of an increasing number of studies on climate changes, have drawn a great deal of global attention. Attention is also being brought to biomass gasification technology offering many advantages from the aspect of reduction of pollution and being the most promising for the future. Currently these technologies are being used in many power generation plants worldwide, in particular in South America, Thailand and India. This paper encompasses only some of the numerous studies on the possibilities of producer gas utilisation, which is obtained from the process of biomass gasification, for propulsion of internal combustion engines. In dual fuel engine operation the level of nitrogen oxide NOx is lower in comparison with operation of pure diesel engine due to lower highest burning temperature, whileas the level of CO emission is higher due to inefficient combustion. When running an engine solely on gas numerous advantages in environmental protection have been ascertained: the level of NOx and CO emissions have been found to be considerably lower than the highest levels allowed by many countries including USA and EU.
