Criticism of a social explanation of folks’ religion

Sažetak

The phenomenon of folks’ religion is usually explained by social reasons.
For this purpose anthropology and sociology adduce four principal causes: acculturation within indigenous areas, class conflicts in rural areas, church hegemony inside ideological frameworks and political movements in the conditions of social disturbances. However, a more attentive and rigorous analysis easily renders problematic a number of theses which purport to find a social explanation of popular religion. Such an analysis forms the nucleus of this article.
