Sažetak
This article deals with the question what aims and what procedures for learning and teaching in school and in other educational institutions are appropriate in view of the importance of media for the individual and for society. Starting from a case of conflict in the use of media (as an example) a model of action is presented to describe meaningful conditions of learning and teaching. By the model, situational challenges, needs of the youth, the level of knowledge and experience as well as the level of intellectual and social-moral development are connected as important dispositions for media use and actions in general and for reflecting their consequences. Against this background, the ability and willingness to act in a skilled, autonomous, creative, and socially responsible way are emphasized as aims for learning and teaching in a world influenced by media. To achieve these aims the situation of life and the needs of the youth are to be included in processes of learning and teaching. At the same time, these processes should enhance knowledge and experience and promote the intellectual and social-moral development. In the article, it is argued that dealing with tasks which demand self-directed inquiries, problem solving, decision making, evaluating, or creating own products can help to realize these intentions. Finally – and especially concerned with media competence and media literacy education – five areas of tasks of learning about media are described: distinguishing and using appropriate types of media for a variety of purposes, creating and disseminating own media messages, understanding and evaluating the design of media messages, becoming aware and dealing with media influences, identifying and assessing conditions of media production and media dissemination.
