Sažetak

The aim of this work is to investigate the infl uence of chemical treatment by inorganic acids (H2SO4 and HNO3) as oxidizing agents on the surface properties of carbon black. The specifi c surface area, average pore diameter, total pore volume were analyzed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) methods. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was used to identify the changes in the sample surface groups before and after chemical treatment. Microscopic observation was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) method. The results have shown that chemical treatment by H2SO4 modified the carbon black surface. At the same time there were no significant changes in the specific surface area, average pore diameter, total pore volume after treatment with both acids. The obtained results allow assessment of the use of carbon black as an adsorbent thereby extending the scope of its application.
