Slavonski Brod, Galovo, archaeological investigations in 2012

Sažetak

In July 2012 the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb resumed the archaeological excavations at the site of Galovo in the north-eastern part of Slavonski Brod. The site belongs to an Early Neolithic settlement of the Starčevo culture from the incipient—Linear A—phase of its evolution. The investigations have been carried out for the last 16 years, covering a total of 3600 m2. The work focused on the excavation in the trench abutting on the surface excavated in the previous year in the southern part of the ritual-burial area discovered in 1997, the first excavation season at Galovo. The excavations yielded another small grave pit, of the same shape as the grave pit discovered in 2011, with a single burial and a number of grave goods. The archaeological material belongs to the Linear A phase, corroborating the thesis that northern Croatia formed part of the core area of the Starčevo culture, where settlements were built throughout its evolutionary phases (with the exception of the Monochrome phase).
