Sažetak

Aphasia, a condition present in 25-40% of individuals who have suffered a stroke, causes serious communication problems. The purpose of this study was to explore current public awareness and knowledge of aphasia. The standard Public Awareness of Aphasia questionnaire (Code, 2001) was used, which poses five basic questions about aphasia. A total of 236 individuals were surveyed in five Croatian counties (Bjelovar-Bilogora, Krapina-Zagorje, Osijek-Baranja, Split-Dalmatia and the City of Zagreb). Results indicated that 48% of respondents reported having previously heard of aphasia. Of this group, 54% met the criterion for demonstrating a “basic knowledge of aphasia”. The majority of respondents had heard about aphasia through the media (82%), a result demonstrating the important role played by the media in providing information. In today´s world of modern technologies, the benefits of various media (television, radio, newspapers, journals and above all the Internet) for informing and educating the public about any specific topic should be used to its maximum potential.
