Sažetak

A young worker operating an industrial sterilizer using ethylene oxide was exposed to the gas for a period of about 20 days. During this time he experienced a constant smell of gas, burning eyes and respiratory distress but was admitted to the Ward of Occupational Diseases and Toxicology only after having developed bilateral footdrop with steppage gait. On examination he appeared confused, with marked conjunctivitis and blepharospasm and the neurological clinical evidence of neuropathy and myelopathy. However, he made an unexpectedly rapid recovery. Since the neurologic sequelae of occupational exposure to ethylene oxide have only recently been recognized in the literature, this case of ethylene oxide induced polyneuropathy was retrogradely diagnosed.
