Abstract

The article deals with two works of Venetian school of painting in the Franciscan province of Bosna Srebrena: The Return of the Holy Family from the Temple and St. Anthony of Padua by Gian Antonio Guardi (1699-1760) at the Franciscan monastery of the Holy Trinity at Petričevac (Banja Luka), and The Virgin and the Child with St. Anthony of Padua by Francesco Guardi (1712—1793) at the Franciscan monastery of St. John the Baptist at Kraljeva Sutjeska. Both attribution were made by Grgo Gamulin. The author proposes an exact location and iconography of the first, suggesting also a later date, to the last phase of the activity of Gian Antonio Guardi. The other painting, from Kraljeva Sutjeska, bears the date of 1775 and the name of father G(a)rga from Vareš, who acquired it. Comparisons with drawings and similar small scale works on religious topics around 1760 confirm Francesco Guardi's authorship. The presence of the works of the great masters of the Venetian Rococo in the Franciscan monasteries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in addition to their artistic quality, are a witness to strong centennial ties with Venice cultivated by the Franciscans in the Bosnia othomana.
