A TIME OF CULTURECIDE
Davor Stipan
Abstract
The article begins with a question: How is it possible that
culturecide, a destructive and criminal engagement aimed at
the focuses of the identity of our national culture, is becoming
an omnipresent fact? It is hard for the civilised person to understand the activities that have recently happened primarily
in our coastal urban historical units. Actively following events
and trends in the treatment of national cultural properties, the
author thinks that we are called upon to express our concern,
disgust even sometimes, with the situation and the procedure
of the alleged protection provided them. Alarming examples
of menaces to the heritage are nothing but a marginalisation
of the voice of general and professional stakeholders and
an exception from any kind of sensitivity and respect from
those responsible for the cultural heritage. When the public is
bypassed, the point of endeavours for integrated rehabilitation
projects to become the generator of sustainable development
is being lost.
The article recalls the terrifying examples of the destruction of
cultural properties, like the planned development on Srđ Hill
above Dubrovnik, and a series of recent examples in Split, like
the demolition of the protected Baroque Contarini Bastion and
the obstruction in the elaboration of the City Core and Substructions of Diocletian’s Palace Management Plan.
It is important, in the light of these considerations, to emphasise the essential relevance of the document Ljubljana
Process II, in which we should see and seek an opportunity
for its objectives and guidelines finally to become a reality in
Croatian practice.
