Church and Media – a Challenge for Theological and Pastoral Reflection and Action
Jerko Valković
; Hrvatsko katoličko sveučilište, Zagreb
Sažetak
For a more complete understanding of basic accents of the Church’s theological and pastoral reflections on media, it is necessary to take into account the processes, i.e. the cultural and historical context within which the Church meets with media and reflects on them. In that sense, the author first points to fundamental determinants of the relationship between the Church and media through history presenting it like a walk from the initial distrust to the call to dialogue. A new way in which the Church, in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, views her own mission and a new look at the media in which She recognizes the promoters of new culture, has marked the Church’s reflections and activities in recent decades. A rapid development of media, new way of communicating and the role that media play in the life of today’s society and man are challenging for the Church who is called to constant following the world of media and to adequate pastoral activity. The author recognizes special challenges in the emergence of new (media) anthropology, in the demand for permanent ethical reflection and coping
with new models of communication.
