Basic Antimicrobial Agents for the Treatment of Bacterial Respiratory Infections
Igor Francetić
Sažetak
Respiratory infections are the most common
reason for visiting a primary care doctor. As their etiology
is mostly viral, they do not require the administration of
antimicrobial agents. However, these are unnecessarily
prescribed in more than 50% of upper respiratory infections.
In the treatment of bacterial respiratory infections, the
antimicrobial spectrum, undesirable effects, suitability
of use and price should be taken into account in the
selection of the antimicrobial agent. Based on these criteria
in the treatment of bacterial respiratory infections, the
following drugs can be considered as basic antimicrobial
agents: amoxicillin, penicillin G, doxycycline, azithromycin,
amoxicillin with clavulanic acid and cefuroxime. This article
provides a systematic review of basic antimicrobial agents
in the treatment of bacterial respiratory infections.
