Sažetak
In this paper we shall discuss the possibilities, challenges and hardships related to upbringing, from the viewpoint of the philosophy of education. Teachers face these challenges and hardships every day. The teacher´s calling is of utmost importance for various reasons, among which their role in upbringing could be considered central, since it is through this role precisely that teachers can have a huge and direct influence in the formation of the children's personalities, and their transition to adulthood in general. This fact was recognized by many philosophers from the Antiquity to today, who are in the focus of this paper, and who've dealt with interpreting various influences and practices in upbringing and education. Therefore, in this paper we want to highlight and, at least succinctly, analyze some of the key philosophical positions important for the formation of the wholesome, independent and mature person, or, in other words, we want to point to the goals that teachers strive to fulfill every day, while attempting to help the children to become independent and mature adults. To this end, we will give an overview of the positions advocated by Plato, J. J. Rousseau and J. Dewey – the three pioneers of the philosophy of education.
