Sažetak
Subclinical deficiencies often go unnoticed, resulting in significant economic losses to the livestock industry. Therefore, early identification of deficit symptoms and the immediate correction of diet is imperative. Determination of certain blood parameters (blood serum and/or plasma) in cows can contribute to the diagnosis, and to determining the nature and severity of the disorder. The aim of this study was to determine the concentrations of total protein, albumin, triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood of dairy cows. We investigated a total of 480 Holstein-Friesian cows, aged 2 to 9 years old. The cows were in varying order of lactation (1-8). This study was conducted in two geographical areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina: in the north - Farm T (45°01’43.4”N 17°18’19.0”E) (n=240) and the south – Farm V (43°03’52.7”N 17°42’38.2”E) (n=240). Sampling was conducted in two periods: summer and winter. The investigated animals were high lactating cows (n=240), cows up to 15 days
after parturition (n=120) and cows in the dry period (n=120). Concentration of total protein at farms T and V showed a statistically significant difference between localities in both seasons. Albumin concentrations were significantly different between localities, depending on period, and between seasons at different localities. Statistical analysis did not establish a statistically significant difference in the concentrations of triglycerides in the summer sampling period between the two locations, and it can be concluded that geographical areas had no effect on this parameter. Cholesterol concentrations were not statistically different between locations in the same season. Statistically significant differences (P<0.05) were found between seasons at the same site. Also, significantly higher values were observed in winter than in summer at both sites.
