Mathematical Views in 16th Century Dubrovnik

Sažetak

There was no particular mathematical research in the 16th century Dubrovnik. However, certain mathematical views can be found in Dialogo sopra la sfera del mondo (1579) by Nikola Nalješković and in Irene overo della bellezza (1599) by Miho Monaldi. Nalješković dedicated one chapter to mathematics, understanding it in the Aristotelian sense especially in relation to the division of arithmetics and geometry. Monaldi understood mathematics in its Platonic sense and derived the concept of beauty from it. In his work Monaldi connected arithmetics, geometry, astronomy and music in the way it was done in the system of quadrivium. He also referred to the structure of the universe dividing it into the celestial and terrestrial parts in the Aristotelian sense. In relation to that he discussed astrology, distinguishing between a more or less useful influence of the planets.
