Mercantle and Cultural Globalization: Giuseppe Parini’s The Day

Sažetak
The new edition of Giuseppe Parini’s complete works (2021) is a mine of forms that help us understand his discourse on what was then contemporary Italian society, and France, whose culture of the time greatly influenced Italian culture. The close textual analysis presented in the paper indicates that Parini compares Voltaire to Proteus (''multiforme''); Voltaire and Jean Jacques Rousseau to Aristippus and Diogenes; the French writer and courtesan Ninon de Lenclos to the Greek Aspasia and to Thais, a character in the Latin theatre and also in Dante’s Inferno. On the other hand, the influences of French customs, but also xenophilia in general, ironically treated by Parini (i.e., as an invitation to consume goods of the most varied origins) in his masterpiece The Day, lead to a reading that recognizes an effective, almost ''sociological'' syntheses in which, by way of conclusion, we find the phenomenon today known under the term ''globalization''.
