Sažetak
Selection of plants was, in the past, the result of individual taste and fashion and the goal was not to achieve certain spatial forms. In the literature plants are treated separately and arranged by their visual characteristics. The need landscape design is to reveal the hidden potentials of plants that is beyond individual pleasure. The goal is to define criteria for plant selection as the result of visual characteristics of the plants. On the basis of such criteria we must define appropriateness of the plants for creating visual effects. In that sense we can express the meaning by connecting morphological characteristics and plant features. The subject of research is plant material, more precisely plant species Morphological characteristics of plants are defined and their effects on perception of this characteristic are presented. 206 shrubs and 193 tree species are organized by their height, form, habitus, texture, color and the time of their transformation. Next section shows detailed classification of plants by their visual characteristics. The paper gives criteria for choosing morphological characteristics of plants that help in achieving visual effects of plants. Partitions are the tool for choosing the plant; the process is demonstrated on concrete examples. It has been found, that the method of selecting the plant species by their visual characteristics is appropriate. For the final selection of plant species, some additional criteria, resulting from eco-physiological needs of the plants (e.g. lighting, health, soil characteristics) and their technological demands (cultivation pretentiousness), need to be added.
