Sažetak
With the development of technology in phytopathology, digital techniques for assessing the plant disease severity are replacing insufficiently reliable and subjective classical techniques of visual plant analysis and quantifying the disease severity based on scales with a numerical range. Semi-automatic digital techniques in the form of smartphone applications (Leaf Doctor) or softwares (ImageJ) are objective, simple, faster and more reliable techniques for assessing the disease severity. The smartphones application (Leaf Doctor) is a more reliable and accessible technique in contrast to the computer software (ImageJ), especially in field research, because it provides real-time results of assessing the disease severity. In addition to numerous advantages, there are disadvantages in the application of digital techniques due to the demanding criteria in achieving a high-quality image on a suitable background. Also, introduced digital techniques for quantifying symptoms based on photos are of great importance, especially in leaf diseases, and personal skill and expertise play a significant role in the performance of photo analysis. Despite the strict criteria for obtaining a high-quality image for analysis, digital techniques are a valuable tool in phytopathological studies that needs further refinement and training of users with the aim of increasing the possibility of daily use in phytopathology, as well as in integrated plant production.
