E-learning in Medical Education Management: Bibliometric Indicators and Content Analysis

Sažetak
Medical education is considered costly and requires physical infrastructure as well as human resources and various materials, so efficient education management is of utmost importance. Therefore, the mass adoption of e-learning tools due to the COVID-19 pandemic has brought many opportunities for educational management, but also challenges, especially for medical programmes due to the required laboratory exercises. Because of the need to evaluate the perception and quality of distance education, research activity in this area has increased significantly. To review research in this area, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 699 studies published from 2020 to 2023 on medical education and e-learning and provided insights into key bibliometric indicators such as the most productive countries, organisations, and journals. The analysis revealed an increasing number of publications and citations, amounting to 7.8 citations per publication. The most productive country was the United States, but much research was also conducted in developing countries. The most influential journal was Medical Education. A content analysis and keyword analysis were used to identify the main themes of publications, which addressed the challenges and experiences of students, teachers, and institutions and focused on undergraduate medical education, dental education, nursing, clinical skills, anatomy, radiology, telemedicine, and primary care. E-learning is likely to become permanent in some areas of medical education because it is accessible to a larger number of students and reduces delivery costs. In addition, improving educational management by developing high-quality e-learning tools and incorporating existing experiences contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which address both good health and quality education.
