Half a Century of the Uncertain Canonization of Dubrovnik Drama Francesarie

Abstract

In honour of the fiftieth anniversary of not only the manifestation Dani Hvarskoga kazališta, but also of the two neighbouring anniversaries of Molière (1622-1673), the article discusses the cultural and scholarly status of these adaptations within the last fifty years spanning their critical edition. Although they do figure as part of the Croatian literary canon, since there is no history, anthology or lexicographic handbook concerning Croatian literatue that does not mention them, Croatian historians and scholars differ in their attitude to their originality and literary and/or theatrical value. Critical studies devoted to individual plays also start from different premises regarding the analytical and interpretive challenges they pose, predominantly trying to problematize their status as translations, adaptations, or indeed original texts, and to emphasise their culturological importance, let alone eventual performative capacities, often however also privileging some at the expense of other plays of the adapted corpus. Besides dealing with the uncertain line of their canonization, the article also endeavours to put the discussion into the perspective of contemporary translation studies, especially the branch of this prominent field which focus on the specifics of translating plays, as well as on the cultural assimetries in power implied in such connecting of the two cultures.
